High school algebra classes, college calculus lectures, statistics sections for students who only took the course because it was required. In all that time I never met a single student who could not learn mathematics. I met plenty who had never been taught in a way that made sense to them, which is a completely different problem, and it is a solvable one.
I am retired from full-time teaching now, but I still keep a small number of one-on-one tutoring spots open each month. Most tutoring is delivered by people who are good at math. That is a low bar, and it is not the same skill as teaching math. A strong student who recently passed calculus can usually show your child how they solved a problem. What they generally cannot do is look at three lines of messy work and immediately say, "You are not struggling with derivatives, you are struggling with fractions from seventh grade, and that is why every product rule question falls apart."
That diagnostic instinct is the thing thirty years buys you. I have graded tens of thousands of exams. I have seen the same handful of misconceptions repeat across generations of students: the sign error that comes from misunderstanding subtraction as an operation rather than the addition of a negative, the belief that a variable is a mystery number rather than a quantity that varies, the habit of memorising a procedure without ever asking what it is doing. When I sit with a student for an hour, I am not just answering the homework question in front of us. I am finding the crack underneath it and repairing that.
What working with me actually looks like
- A real diagnostic first. Our first session is spent finding out what the student genuinely understands, not what their grade says. I ask them to talk me through problems out loud. Nine times out of ten, the root cause sits one or two years below the course they are currently failing.
- A plan you can see. After the diagnostic, I write out the specific gaps we need to close, in order, with a realistic sense of how long each one takes. Parents get that plan too, so nobody is paying for a vague open-ended arrangement.
- Understanding before speed. We build the concept first, then the procedure, then the exam pace. Students who only drill procedures collapse the moment a question is worded differently. Students who understand the idea can rebuild the procedure from scratch when they forget it, and they always forget it under exam stress.
- Homework that is short and deliberate. I would rather assign six carefully chosen problems than sixty. Every problem I give has a reason, and I read the work before the next session.
- Honest progress reports. If a student is not putting in the work, I will tell you kindly and clearly. If a student is doing everything right and simply needs more time, I will tell you that too.
Who I work with
High school students in pre-algebra, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statistics. College students in college algebra, precalculus, calculus I through III, linear algebra, differential equations, and introductory statistics, including the statistics courses required in psychology, nursing, business, and the social sciences. I also work with students preparing for the SAT and ACT math sections, and with adults returning to school who have not touched an equation in twenty years and are quietly terrified about it.
That last group deserves a special mention. If you are a returning student, you are not behind, you are restarting, and restarting is something I am very good at helping with. I have taught plenty of adults who walked in convinced they would fail and walked out with a solid grade and, more importantly, without the dread.
The part most families underestimate: confidence
Math anxiety is real and it is measurable. A student who believes they cannot do math will freeze on a problem they are perfectly capable of solving, then interpret the freeze as further proof they cannot do math. It is a loop, and once it takes hold, no amount of extra worksheets will break it. What breaks it is a sequence of genuine successes on problems that are slightly beyond what the student thought they could do, delivered by someone who is patient enough to wait while they think.
I never rush a student who is thinking. Silence in a tutoring session is not wasted time, it is the sound of learning happening. Over thirty years I learned to sit with that silence rather than jumping in to rescue. The moment a student solves something themselves, without being told, their whole posture changes. That moment is the entire job.
Sessions, format, and availability
Sessions run one hour, one-on-one, either online over video with a shared whiteboard or in person locally. Online works remarkably well for math; the shared whiteboard means I can see every line of a student's work as they write it, which is often more revealing than sitting beside them. Most students see me once a week, and students preparing for a specific exam sometimes move to twice a week in the weeks before it.
I keep the roster deliberately small. I am retired, and I only take on the number of students I can genuinely prepare for and think about between sessions. That means spots are limited and they usually fill through word of mouth, but it also means you get a tutor who remembers exactly where your student struggled last Tuesday.
Questions I get asked most
"How quickly will we see a difference?" Confidence usually shifts within two or three sessions. Grades typically follow within a marking period, because grades lag the learning by however long it takes for the next assessment to arrive.
"My child is failing and the class has already moved on. Is it too late?" No. We work on the current material and the missing foundation in parallel. It is more work, but it is very much doable, and I have done it many times.
"My student is already getting an A but wants more." Wonderful. Some of my favourite work is with strong students who want competition problems, proof writing, or a genuine head start on calculus rather than more of the same.
